We are excited to announce a new paper from our lab members, titled “Typologizing the Hydro-Environmental Research on Climate Change Adaptation of Water Infrastructure in the Mediterranean Region”, authored by Stamou AI, Mitsopoulos G, Sfetsos A, Stamou AT, Varotsos KV, Giannakopoulos C, and Koutroulis A. This paper has been published in the journal Atmosphere (2024, 15(12):1526) and provides an insightful exploration into the adaptation of water infrastructure to climate change impacts in the Mediterranean region.

The study focuses on Water Infrastructure (WI)—encompassing water supply, wastewater, and stormwater systems—that faces increasing vulnerabilities due to climate change. By examining the European Commission’s technical guidelines on “Climate-proofing Infrastructure” and the associated hydro-environmental research, the paper identifies gaps and opportunities for improving WI adaptation strategies.

This work offers a comprehensive framework to enhance the integration of engineering insights into climate adaptation strategies for water infrastructure, making it an invaluable resource for policymakers and researchers alike.
