We are excited to announce the First Kick-off Meeting of the Med-IREN Project, coordinated by NCSR Demokritos, which will take place at the Municipality of Egaleo, Town Hall. This event marks the beginning of a groundbreaking initiative to climate-proof Mediterranean critical infrastructures.

The Med-IREN (Mediterranean Critical Infrastructure Resilience Engineering with Nature-based Solutions) project focuses on enhancing climate risk management and ensuring the businesas continuity of essential infrastructure across sectors such as energy, transport, water, ICT, and social services. By introducing Nature-based Solutions (NBS), the project will showcase how to mitigate climate change impacts and build resilient infrastructures in the Mediterranean, a recognized climate hot-spot.

Key elements of the Med-IREN project include:

• Five lighthouse regions in the Mediterranean, representing current challenges, aligned with regional policies.
• Replication of solutions in four additional regions, covering the Mediterranean, Black Sea, and Boreal regions.
• Integration of participatory governance, citizen engagement, and innovative financing mechanisms.
• Development of a high-end digital decision-making support toolset that integrates data, cutting-edge models, and advanced visualization capabilities.

This project will build upon the research output of over 15 European and National projects, positioning the EU as a global leader in the twin green and digital transition, and contributing to the success of the EU Green Deal.
